Born out of the North-East London barrio of Dalston, Wired County subscribe to the time-honored pub-rock ethic of anytime, anywhere with minimal equipment and a tough truckload of goodtime down-home original songs. The band was first conceived at the beginning of '98 by cheeky cockney gravel-voiced frontman Laurence Johns and guitar slinger/studio whizzkid 'Baldy' Jon Shardlow. Inspired by his mother's record collection, Johns (ex-Dolmen) drew upon Shardlow's (ex-Jam Professors) Stones fixation to create some first-rate gutter-fresh country music. The band's line-up was sealed immediately with the recruitment of bass virtuoso Dave Farren (ex-Bad Manners), skintight drummer Bill Austin (ex-Walking Wounded) and Telecaster master Spike Liseiko (ex-Lost In Austin) Drawing influences from the same musical well - i.e. Byrd/Stones/Beatles - they wasted no time in honing an original set, with intense rehearsals at Farren's shotgun shack in Crouch End (complete with front porch, knackered pick-ups and scruffy dogs). They learnt early on the importance of twang and jangle, with both Telecaster and Rickenbacker 12-string vying for prominence in their sound over the backbeat of Austin's rockabilly drums and Farren's doghouse bass, hitting a rich country seam while ricocheting off the Memphis soul influence of the great Dan Penn. While being peculiarly private perfectionists, they have come out into the light on various occasions, often on the stage of Dalston's Trolley Stop, where they have constantly proved themselves a ruthlessly riveting live machine, and in May '98 at the fabled Philosophy Society, where they took the early shift after The Gourds.
