The Northern Comedy Group RAQ (Rarely Asked Questions)
Who Are You?
At the moment, just me (Steve), a group of people who have expressed an interest, and – in the background for now, as he’s busy - my co-writer Gavin. I’m based Chesterfield/Sheffield, and Gavin in Nottingham. Both of us have full-time jobs (though I’m about to be thrown out, I think). I’ve been writing about three years, him longer. We met at a sketch-writing competition in London.
And What’s the Plan?
To start with, I’d like to get together a local group of writers, actors, stand-ups – or whatever - on the basis that there’s nothing like having stuff performed in order to improve it and present it. Everyone is welcome, whether amateur or professional. Meet in a room in a pub.
At the very least we should have some fun, but hopefully we can progress to some kind of reasonably professional pub or theatre show, or a video for submission to production companies. I’m very open to suggestions and ideas.

Gavin’s sitcom “Smarter than the Average Bear” elicited a request for two more scripts from the Comedy Unit, Glasgow. I co-wrote these with him (which probably explains their subsequent rejection).
Our radio sitcom “Govan, We Have a Problem” was nearly accepted for the Comedy Unit’s “Playhouse” for Radio Scotland. We think it’s still under consideration i.e. they are considering rejecting it a second time.
We have had two radio sitcoms through to second readings by the BBC (then rejected of course). I am currently working on one of these (“Wagon Tales”) as a short stage play.
Our script “Waterview” made it to the f
