I am sorry to say but it is not the students who need to get their acts together it is us actors. We allow them to exploit us because of our desire for being seen. If we actually said 'put up or shut up' more often we might even find the respect we duly deserve but far too many of us out there don't think of our fellow actors when a role comes up in these situations. A portion of blame must also go to the respective course tutors. Too often they tell their students that 'actors are two a penny when they want recognition. Exploit their eagerness for showreel footage.' When tutors decide to offer their services for nothing I will perhaps consider matching their deal, until then, I will gladly stand up and ask for a fair day's wedge for a fair day's graft. Sick and Tired? You bet! But I am sick and tired of us actors cheating ourselves in the hope of getting that impossible break.
