Re: Interesting Casting Info?

I second that emotion...
Making films has always been an expensive business and I been known to attack certain LB Filmakers for their tactics at raising the required funds.
However, Johnny Oddball has made absolutely no secret of the fact that he is attempting to make this film with UKP3.50 and a smile for a budget so having to source your own costumes shouldn't come as a great surprise...I'm sure he mentiponed this in one of his previous posts too. He cartainly stated that camping out would be required and that you would have to bring your own tents...so no surprises there either.
However, asking for 20 quid from each participant to cover "location fees" is a bit naughty and with a reported 300 extras required that would raise UKP 6,000 in cash. Now that is some location fee for what equates toi little more than a muddy field. I've got spectacular 16th Century castles for a fraction of that daily rate.
Hats off to Johnny Oddball for trying to put something together, but to maintain a sprit of cooperation all "mandatory contributions" shouldn't be sprung on your volunteers at the auditions and should be indicated in plain english in the casting call.
That way, people can make up their own minds wether to apply or not...I didn't apply for the simple reason that if all participants are required to source their own uniform, which was my understanding of this from the first message, it going to look like an episode of Dads Army with everyone wearing different uniforms and representing different regiments. You could even end up the Italians and French actually doing some fighting!! The Military Advisor is definately going to have their work cut out with this one.
In short...
1) It is up to the individual to decide wether to not to work for free
2) If a `contribution` is requested by the producers then this should be announced from the first casting call
3) If a contribution is mandatory then a contract should be provided giving the financier a share of the profits. There is no such thing as a free lunch...even in filmaking.
4) If a contribution is mandatory it should be clear that all participants have to contribute not just the actors which is often the case.
My tuppence..
