For what it's worth, from a less experienced actor who is a genuine American: Johnny Oddball auditioned me for the same film in late August/early September. I was surprised to see that he was casting again 3 or 4 months later.(Regardless of any other factors I've assumed I was too old really). Anyway, I don't recall ever being asked if I'd contribute money toward the project, though it was understood that it would be unpaid. When he put the casting call on last month, he did say something about wanting people that were involved for the right reasons. I think that, while that doesn't necessarily mean actors were expected to pay, it should make the request for a contribution a bit less surprising. To be honest, while I happen to have a postgraduate History degree, an interest in the subject, and related family history, I applied for the film to gain experience as an actor and exposure. In this, I don't think I was terribly unusual. I'd have been happy to go unpaid but probably not to cough up my own dough. We pay agents already, don't we? I agree, though, in principle - to be unattracted by the prospect of funding someone else's film seems reasonable, not mercenary.
