I have to take issue with BEN SON's assertion that "doing shorts for no money" is a good route to "the next big thing". There is no guaranteed route to the next big thing, but doing work which is properly paid is more likely to propel you on to the next properly paid job.
I'm not particuarly interested in being "the next big thing" ( probably just as well). I am interested in earning a living as an actor - and that means being paid.
Anyone setting out on a no/low pay venture does need to be careful how it is set up as it is illegal to employ someone without paying at least the national minimum wage and actors/crew members etc COULD insist on being paid after they have done the work so it makes sense to check your legal obligations if you are embarking on something like this.
I agree with Antoinette about big commercial concerns taking the **** .
