Love in the Time of Cinema: An Evening With Mike Newell Film director Mike Newell will take to the stage for a masterclass and Q&A after a full screening of one of his classic films Donnie Brasco on Wednesday 5th December at the University of Hertfordshire. Charting his career to date, the audience will get an insight into what working with such Hollywood greats as Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie and, not to mention, all those at Hogwarts, is really like! Mike Newell, who will be literally stepping off the plane from the US where he has been promoting his latest release Love in the time of Cholera, explains how he went from St Albans to Hollywood in a few easy steps. Directing such greats as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pushing Tin, Mona Lisa Smile and then taking the helm of the fourth instalment of the phenomenon that is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Mike talks of how he is drawn to the “human factor” of filmmaking. The evening will start with a full screening of Donnie Brasco, starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino, which charts the true story of an FBI undercover agent who, in the 70s, infiltrates the mob in what became the most successful mole operation ever. The screening will then be followed by an on stage interview with Mike Newell followed by an audience Q&A session. FDMX Project Co-ordinator Sarah Burlison said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to provide that vital link between learning and industry practice. With such events FDMX is able to create professional experiences for the audience and build awareness that there is a wealth of filmmaking talent coming out of our region.” Details: Doors open 5.30pm Screening starts 6.00pm Interval with refreshments at 8.00pm Mike Newell Interview starts 8.30pm Audience Q&A at 9.30pm Venue: The Weston Auditorium, de Havilland Campus, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, Herts, AL10 9AB Cost & booking: £4 FDMX Members (membership to FDMX is free and bookings can be made online at www.fdmx.co.uk) £6 non-members/on-door payments.
