The Beholder - Low Budget Feature Project
Late one night, a group of students are sitting round a pub table passionately debating the existence of God. At the centre of debate is Matt the dark, volatile and highly intelligent science student and Lucy, the sensitive 'spiritual' vicar's daughter. Later, as the argument spills out onto the street Matt humiliates Lucy and she runs off into the night. Seeing her upset Matt pursues Lucy and tries to make peace with her, explaining his bad experiences with religion as a child.
The next morning, Matt receives a worried phone call from one of the other students from that night (Kelly) who tells Matt that Lucy failed to return to the university halls. Three days later and Lucy is still missing. As a Police enquiry is launched, Matt falls under suspicion despite his vigorous claims of innocence. Things then take a dramatic turn for the worst when each of the other students from the night in question begin to disappear in mysterious circumstances, and always it seems, when Matt is in proximity. As the authorities begin to circle Matt and his own confusion and paranoia reaches feverish intensity a terrifying 'stranger' appears from nowhere and begins to stalk him. Now fearing for his life as well as his sanity Matt faces a race against time to discover the identity of the mysterious stranger and fate of his friends. But Matt's search will lead to a devastating and unforgettable revelation.
The Beholder is the remake of a feature pilot that was made some years ago. It's a terrific, original and challenging story that I would like to improve upon this time around. I now have a backer and bigger budget (though not extravagantly so) and the time and expertise to deliver on the scripts original promise. This is actually my second feature, my first 'The Brink' will premiere at The European Film Market in Berlin next month and I plan to go further with The Beholder. I'm looking for hardworking focused actors who are available for our shooting dates and the weeksleading up to principal photography. Casting will be from 6th to 8th of February and are likely to include intensive auditions/workshops and call-backs so make sure you are available for the rest of week. The successful actors will be called to special meeting on Saturday the 9th of Feb.
Character Breakdown
Matt 21-25
Height : 5’8” – 5’9”
Dark, handsome, strong, charismatic, intelligent and intense. A thinker and a rebel with perhaps violent emotional undercurrents Jim Morrison meets Jean Paul Sartre. Make no mistake; this is a highly concentrated demanding role that will require intelligence, subtlety and buckets of physical and emotional stamina. Not for the faint hearted. This role will involve revealing layer after layer of complex psychological states; you must be prepared for research and endless rehearsals. You should have a great voice as well.
Gemma 21-25
Height: 5’7” – 5’9’
Gemma, the ‘babe’ or bimbo of the group, who gets caught up in Matt’s story and is with him to the bitter and tragic end. You should look great, but have the ability to convey authenticity and raw emotion. What do we make of Gemma? At times vacant and disinterested, vain and self interested, she is perhaps at times being disingenuous about her real thoughts and feelings. Despite everything, she has real compassion for people, which will be her ultimate undoing.
Height: 5’7” – 5’9’
Ben, the hippie and ‘wise-****’ of the group; he is another slacker like Neil, but has intelligence and modicum of commitment to do just enough. Long-haired and into his music he has a side-line selling dope etc. Witty, funny and amusing Ben’s self-confidence and affable manner hides a timid and secure nature brought about by years of bullying as a child.
Please reply with an e-mail address so details can be forwarded to you.
**Note: We are on an extremely tight budget so principal roles will be paid at £200 a week for the three week shoot. Supporting cast will receive expenses plus a deferred contract. We hope you will understand.
