The Young Persons’ Theatre Company is looking for a creative design team to assist in costume production for our next stage production, Flamingo Blues, a new musical which will be staged at an off West End venue in July 2007. Taking its inspiration from the film noir genre of the 1940s and 50s, the story is set in the Chicago of 1952, and tells a story of power and corruption, murder and double cross in a contemporary take on a classic style. Flamingo Blues is the first stage musical of its kind, and one which has already had a great deal of interest from the industry. Following the 1950’s theme, our designer is looking to replicate styles with a cartoon/comic book edge, which gives a vast design scope and a chance to really play with the characters creatively. The costume team will be involved in liasing with the designer and individuals will have the opportunity to put their own creative flare into designs and production. Technical experience is not necessarily essential, although you must have a good eye for detail and willingness to work in all areas, as we are also looking for assistance in sourcing items, such as shoes and accessories, for purchasing or to recreate ourselves. Please state any skills or specialised areas you have, for example - Pattern cutting, dress making/ modelling on stand, beading/ decorative work, tailoring, millenary skills, shoe design. In addition, we are also looking for specialists in men's tailoring, hat making and porp making to work closely with the designers in creating the world of the play. Please state any specific skills. Flamingo Blues will be YPTC’s third major stage production and follows on from the success of previous shows, Bugsy Malone at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadlers Wells in 2004, Requiem for Tomorrow, a new musical at The Shaw Theatre, 2006, and the Era of Youth Showcase at RADA in July 2006. We have also produced two short films – Invalid Debris (2003) and Sting (2004) – both of which have been very well received. The Young Persons’ Theatre Company is a training theatre company for young people aged 19-25. We provide performance training alongside the opportunity to present that work in professional level productions with the aim of preparing students for future study and improving employment prospects. As a result of their work with us, many students have found professional work including roles in Messiah for the BBC, Teachers and Sugar Rush for Channel Four, London a new British film starring Colin Firth and Robert Carlyle, and the film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code. Students have also been seen for Anthony Mingella’s Breaking and Entering, Richard Eyre’s Notes on A Scandal, Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and the West End production of The Lion King. As we have limited funding, the positions will be expenses only, but you will gain the experience of working on a professional stage production which will attract large audiences and publicity, as well as the opportunity to work on future stage and film productions with YPTC and our associate film production company Rustic Spirit Productions.
