A missed opportnity

B-Movie Celebration, 2007.
If you are interested in breaking into the film industry you’ve just missed a golden opportunity. Never mind there will be another chance next year.
This was the first industry event I have attended, but I can tell you, any other will be hard pressed to replicate the friendliness, the informality and easy access to directors, writers, actors, TV personalities and producers.
Charismatic Tom Savini, who’s creativity has enhanced many scary movies, talked openly to fans and fellow professionals in an after hours watering hole, called The Willard.
Jim Wynorski shared the secrets of producing successful low budget movies with new and old hands alike, it was a master class no budding filmmaker should have missed.
His enthusiasm, warmth and insight charmed all who met him and his advice and guidance was exceptional.
The explosive Lloyd Kaufman belied his age of 60 with the humor of a teenager and the wisdom of a genius, managing to plug his book, ‘Make your own damm movie’ in almost every sentence.
Read it, it’s amusing, informative and ignites the imagination of all would be filmmakers.
Jim O’Rear, Jeff Dunn, Virgil Fanklin, David Schlatter, Eric Chatterjee, Mark Burchett, Randy DeFord, Adam Shephard and many more mixed and talked freely with attendees.
Even the presenters of ‘Cinema Insomnia’ mingled, so you could get a hug from The Queen of Trash and pick the brains of Mr LoBo and his extensive B-Movie film knowledge.
You may not be familiar with all the names but these are people who make films or contribute with special effects, music and editing. This was an event where you could stand and talk to anyone. Everyone was approachable.
I was privileged to have been invited to give a talk on scriptwriting and share a round table presentation with Jim O’Rear.
All writers dream of penning the next blockbuster, but in reality it’s unlikely. At this event, the movie industry opened its door to beginners and showed how a novice can get started. An introduction not to be missed.
Make a date for next year, September 26th, 27th and 28th 2008 at Franklin, Indiana.
