First advert to be broadcast into space
Interstellar communication expert, Professor Tony van Eyken, tells us how we can make contact beyond our solar system to anyone \'out there\'
For all of you who sobbed when ET went home, now\'s your chance to create the advert to lure him back. Budding advertising execs here on Earth are being called forward to create a 30 second TV advert about life on earth for Doritos as part of their \'You Make It, We Play It\' Broadcast Project.
See if you can make intergalactic history by creating the first ever advert that will be beamed past the earth\'s atmosphere, beyond our solar system and into the Universe, to anyone \'out there\' that may be watching.
Use your originality and creativity to create an advert and then upload it on to the Doritos website - even promote it on your favourite social networking site if you like. 5 adverts will go through to the final vote and be judged by a panel consisting of 4 stars of the advertising fraternity, 4 people who commission adverts and 4 members of the public. Even if your advert doesn\'t make the final 5 it could tickle the fancy of the weekly judges and bag you a prize.
On 12th June, the space-bound ad will be broadcast from the EISCAT Space Centre in Svalbard, which lies in the Arctic Ocean about midway between northern Norway and the North Pole.
The transmission is being directed at a solar system just 42 light years away from Earth with planets that orbit its star \'47 Ursae Majoris\' (Uma), which is located is located in the Great Bear Constellation - easily identifiable to even the most amateur stargazer. It is very similar to our Sun and hosts a habitable zone that could potentially harbour small terrestrial planets and support life as we know it.
The advert will travel at the speed of light. Within 1.2 seconds the transmission will pass our moon, after 4.5 minutes it will pass Mars (77million kilometres away), in under 9 minutes the signal will whiz past the Sun and five and a half hours later it will travel past Pluto and out of our solar system.
Professor Tony van Eyken, Director of EISCAT (European Incoherent SCATter) Scientific Association said: \'Space exploration and extra-terrestrial life is on everyone\'s radars. Recently, scientists have located two planets in a solar system very similar to Earth\'s, and the UK is launching back into the space race with plans for billions of pounds to be invested in space exploration. Communication with the Universe is a natural extension in our world of open communication.\'
To mark this groundbreaking occasion, we\'ve got the man with the science know-how to explain how it\'s all going to happen. Click below to watch Professor van Eyken, explain why there just might be something out there.
