My 2p is that it would depend somewhat on the nature of the script - lots of big-budget battle scenes, or a small courtroom drama. Pitch it according to the production company's specialities too - would Merchant Ivory be interested in a gangster movie, for instance?
Try finding a similar film you liked the production of, and sending it to them first, you know they'll already be fairly interested, and may read it for you :)
