The real world of Hollywood

Last week I attended the American Film Market in Santa Monica as well as appointments with studio executives regarding some of my scripts.
Firstly the AFM.
Being There.
Yes, it was a great Peter Sellers movie, some say his best, and it was also the experience of the uninitiated on their first visit to the AFM.
The hours past in minutes from the buzz the place had, watching the movers and shakers, move and shake, being part of it all. Brushing past directors, producers, actors, buyers, sellers and want-a-bes.
Having conversations, pressing your card into some stranger’s hand, taking theirs, sharing a coffee with someone almost famous and bumping in to someone who is famous.
It was chaos, orchestrated panic, a kaleidoscope of many moving parts working as one organic ballet. I wish it could have lasted longer; it was gone in a flash, a blink of the eye.
Was it worth going? You bet it was.
From conversations with about 50 producers and directors I’ve 30 to send scripts to.
Secondly, I met with directors and producers I’ve been in discussion with over the web for the last year. Three being major players within the studio networks.
One was on Monday, the first day of the writers strike. I was prepared and made a pre-empt strike by saying, “I hadn’t brought any scripts as I realised he would not be able to read them, but had prepared my resume and a catalogue of titles, logs and synopsises.”
That turned out to be a wise move and was appreciated; resulting in an open door to present once the strike was over.
I did manage to get a script to Ridley Scott a couple of days before the strike, requested through a contact I had made on IMDb-Pro.
If you are out there you will get seen. It is possible to get your scripts to major players without having an agent.
Seek and you will find, ask and it maybe given.
Face to face is the way forward but you have to be there to appreciate the politics, the illusion and the hard work.
Being there is an experience not to be missed if you want to be part of Hollywood.
