We are the Gemstones, a contemporary vocal harmony ensemble. We met through social networking sites, after answering an Ad for singers by Founder and Manager Dorothy Mdoe in early 2008. We formed the current Gemstones Group in March 2008 specifically to enter Last Choir Standing on BBC1. We were in the top 60 in the whole of the UK after forming 3 weeks before the competition and beat off choirs that had been together over 10 years. We have a talented musical director, Marcus Davidson, who is a professional pianist and composer and creates fantastic sounds from very challenging harmonies. www.marcusdavidson.net The Gemstones was formed as part of a community project, The Ultimate Big Break and has continued to create various generations of Gemstones from a gospel choir, a contemporary choir for Last Choir Standing, an acapella group for Xfactor, and an acapella/vocal harmony group in late 2008 to 2009. We also mentor various worthy community groups like UNITY Carnival Arts and PR for up and coming groups like Chante and The Fore. The contemporary choir for Last Choir Standing was a combination of some of the gospel singers, classical singers and some great soul/jazz belters. The acapella group for Xfactor was a smaller group with 2 fantastic lead vocalists with a gospel background. The story for Last Choir Standing was an amazing feat by Dorothy Mdoe whom 3 weeks before the competition advertised for singers the internet via sites like Facebook, myspace & Bebo to form an contemporary urban vocal harmony ensemble that would sing challenging classics, popular pop songs and songs in foreign languages. We think there is a gap in the market for an all female vocal ensemble like us who defy industry stereotypes and can sing very well, look good and captivate audiences. Dorothy Mdoe wrote the Lyrics and tune for an original song, Bwana Yesu and Marcus Davidson composed it. This is a Swahili Gospel Song. We will be recording Bwana Yesu in 2010 with professional singers. Please check out our Youtube auditions on the credits section.
