My name is Nenio Mbazima and I am the founder and director of DeafPower Productions. DeafPower was founded in the year 2000 after I had undergone a seven-month’s training in television/film productions with a television production company in Johannesburg. So far DeafPower has produced five Sign Language films- all our films are Deaf driven. DeafPower Productions concentrates on filming Sign Language films/ television programs with the sole purpose of keeping Deaf people educated/ informed/ entertained and hearing people Deaf aware.We are the voice of and for the Deaf and we know that it is a human right to communicate, to send and receive information. We are to try to keep Deaf people informed through motion pictures and television.The cornerstone for the recognition of the human rights of Deaf people is the recognition of Sign Language as a language of its own. That is why we concentrate on filming only Sign Language programs using Deaf actors so as to take the language of Deaf people and Deaf people themselves to the hearing community. Television offers a window on the world and is a part of modern culture, entertainment, information and education. Everyone including Deaf people, should have the opportunity to be involved in this medium so as to allow their full participation in society.
