About:
Working within the Media Industry was something I always wanted to achieve. After sitting my exams, I decided the next step for me would be to enrol on a course where I could focus my interests, which lay specifically in Film and Television Production, and combine them with a qualification. I undertook a National Diploma, at Stratford upon Avon College in 2003, and throughout this time learnt the fundamentals of Film, Television and Radio Production, Scriptwriting, Advertising and Marketing, and Computer Design. Over those 2 years, I undertook many different roles and responsibilities within groups, and discovered that the roles where I truly excelled myself were production roles.
6 months into my first year of study, I produced my first live television production, a 2 hour magazine show, broadcast live around the campus, and a pre-recorded television show focusing on National Smile Week. Even at 6 months in, I felt like I’d found a role where I could push myself, challenge myself and settled into this role throughout further productions over the coming years.
My first experience in film was as 1st Assistant Director, on a short thriller entitled ‘Hunted’, in October 2004. I’d decided to try and discover what other roles were like, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience from start to finish. Throughout the production, I found myself wanting to be a part of the Production Team, and from then on focused myself on working within this capacity. I continued to expand my knowledge in all manner of different areas, but whenever a big project or assignment came up, I undertook the roles I knew I could excel in.
After the National Diploma, I decided to continue my studies and staying at Stratford, where I undertook a Higher National Diploma. This course furthered my existing skills, and focused on film and television production – the 2 areas I had the most interest in. Over the duration of the course, I organised and undertook a location shoot in New York City, produced three thirty-minute Christmas magazine shows, organised every aspect of a television drama entitled ‘The Teachers Lounge’, shot a documentary based on an upcoming local band, and produced some corporate videos for Trinity Expert Systems and The National School of Government. The biggest project was ‘Contaminated’, a 15 minute thriller, which was shot on location in Cumbria. Alongside a Co-Producer, I organised every aspect from the script proposal right up to the Premiere we held at a local cinema.
I also took the chance to study theory based topics, such as film and cultural studies, and also Law, specifically for Journalism and Media, which I found helped me boost my knowledge, gave me inspiration and made me aware of ways to work around problems faced by media production.
Throughout this course, I focused on the areas I have the most interest in. I had the opportunity to work on some interesting and challenging assignments. Organising a film shoot in New York was an immensely challenging project, yet I found the prospect of arranging a film located 3000 miles away exciting, and even though it was very hard work, enjoyed every second.
I then transferred to Coventry University, and studied for a final year, bumping my Higher National Diploma up to a Bachelor of Arts with Honours. Throughout my final year, I undertook theoretical modules, and focused on Television, Film and Music Studies. I felt that these modules would help me gain more of an insight into the areas of media that I hold the most interest in. I also undertook a module in Business, as I felt that it would boost my organisational skills, and give me the knowledge I’d need to run a successful company, if and when the time comes.
As part of a team, I produced and directed a series of documentarys on paranormal phenomena, and later directed and produced a short film entitled ‘The Rose Brooch’, which was shortlisted for Best Fictional Piece at the Phoenix Media Festival.
I’m currently expanding some ideas I’ve been given, and am looking to gain some experience in theatre production, to further my knowledge and gain new skills in an area I’m not so familiar with, alongside working on film projects as and when they arise.
