Ruth Fortey
About:
Well, my name is Rue, I’m a songwriter/vocalist and I’ve been building up a varied catalogue of songs over the last 16 years. I love writing in all styles but have a passion for big ballads and I see my true vocation in writing the end title songs for the movies! I was commissioned this year to write a lullaby for a friend of a friend in Australia who’s just had a baby (bless). A highlight of my songwriting endeavours was to be able to place directly into Vonda Shepard’s hands a song I wrote about her, “Help Me Vonda”, inspired by the first series of Ally McBeal. I had waited five years to do so and she was very touched.
I am committed to my music career, professional, hard-working and deadline-adhering! I have had a lot of experience but now I need some real professional songwriting commissions to get me on the road to my calling in life! It is my passion and it is my vocation. Send all your work my way and you won't be disappointed!

Training and Skills
Formal Training:
  1. Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA
Other Skills:
Songwriting
Arranging
Producing
Conducting
Singing
I studied an intensive 2-year programme in Professional Music at the world-famous Berklee College in Boston, MA which has served to strengthen my confidence in all of the above skills. I have written and arranged a vast catalogue of songs covering all genres, including:
Rock
Country Pop
RnB
Soul
Musical Theatre
Ambient
Folk
I veer towards strongly emotive or plaintive storytelling. I have been singing professionally for 15 years and am adept at a range of styles as eclectic as my listening tastes. I have arranged songs for all sorts of ensembles for schools and young people and have arranged the vocals on commercial recordings on a professional basis.
Additional Information
Professional experience includes performing my own songs as guest artiste at numerous gigs (followed by enthusiastic audience feedback and CD sales), vocal arranging and performing as a background vocalist on tour for goth-rock band, Sarah Fimm and rock-singer Chris Emerson in New England. Previous experience results from becoming BBC Choirgirl at the age of 16, leading to a great deal of session work for TV, radio and live performances. I’ve heard people inadvertently singing my songs weeks after they’ve been to the gigs, so they are evidently catchy which is very exciting and encouraging.
Writing influences:
Lyrical – Gilbert O’Sullivan, Cole Porter and especially Alan & Marilyn Bergman (making even well-rhymed songs so incredibly heart-rending and beautiful!).
Musical – soul, country, musical theatre, eighties rock and folk ballads, anything emotive (particularly Stephen Sondheim and Michael Masser).
Vocal – Babs Streisand, Karen Carpenter and Gladys Knight. I think my voice is unique but would liken my preferred singing style to Eva Cassidy or Vonda Shepard.
