Camera Operator, Photographer-Stills, Researcher, Sound Recordist
About:
I've worked in cinema, press, publishing, radio & TV since I was 15.
living in, and working from London since 1970.
I was a radio DJ from 1966 to '71 variously named as:
Robin The Hood ('67 -68) pirate radio, mobile disco then Nottingham clubs
Colin King (June '68- four days!)) pirate radio
Martin West (5 June '68- May '70) RFL, BBC Radio Nottingham, 8 Till Late, Penny Farthing and other clubs, represented by Banner Entertainments, then the foremost artistes agency in the East Midlands.
Robin Randall ('70-'71) BBC Radio Brighton and Brighton clubs, represented by Associated Leisure Entertainments after meeting a pre-fame Peter Young!
Since 1961 I've built my experience in presentation, journalism, photography and film making.
I campaigned for commercial radio (1967-72) starting the original
Radio Free London in August 1968 with ex Radio Caroline DJs -
Spangles Muldoon, Stevie Merrick, Jason Wolf and supporters
after first appearances on several local pirate stations in the Nottingham area, mainly those run by John Pearson, Dave Manyon, Peter Golding and friends.
RFL flourished, continued by other London "pirates" inspiring many other stations since.
This was the first major station not to "hide" behind short, pre-recorded transmissions but blatantly go on air live with as professional a sound as possible.
In that second week of August, '68 the aim was to stay on air until caught - which took three days!
The publicity impact from that was enormous.
RFL is the direct ancestor of stations that eventually went legal;
Kiss FM, LGR and others - as they have freely acknowledged.
In 1969 I assisted Barry Schofield to publish
THE RISE AND FALL OF THE FREE RADIO ASSOCIATION
booklet.
My first 16mm film documentary Schools Action Union (1972-3) was distributed by Andi and Pam Engel's POLITKINO (1973-76) then by
THE OTHER CINEMA (1976-84) I was helped by Cinema Action (a home!) John Chesterman (supplied a camera) Fletcher DuBois (supplied a recorder) Robin Murton (recorded some location sound) Mithras Films (free overnight cutting room) and Nick Reid, who financed the post production, not forgetting Martin Corbett (caption cards)
I've worked with a wide range of producers, directors, artistes and companies since 1973 in various roles but mainly as cameraman.
My business names since 1986 have included:
Associated Media Services (1986-89)
Woodvale Television Projects (1989-2001)
WOODVALE (2001-03)
then my own name since Sep 2003.
I founded, own and run THE LIBRARY OF HOME MOVIES
(now LHM LONDON)
a unique service in Europe (maybe the world) since 1995,
which is a library exclusively of home movie films, from the 1920's onwards (also now including video from the 1970s onwards)
available for researchers and programme makers.
Clients get a 12 percent share of any fees earned from research or screening sales of clips from their footage (where provenance is known)
Other anon footage has come from direct purchase.
Leading broadcast clients include: ITN, Carlton, Harlech, Anglia,
BBC People's Century, Horizon, Money Programme, BBC London and Fragment Films; producers of the ITV-1 series;
THE WAY WE WERE.
My recent video work includes the band Elephant Shelf, singer/composer Alisha Sufit, Rupert Herries, Maggie Sand, The Delta Ladies, Dave Shannon, Serica, Jeanie Barton, Big Chief, Atila Husyen, Tim Collinson, Delta Tom Colborne, and London College Of Fashion Final Year 2007 designs by Ada Zanditon, now to be seen on more web sites than I can keep count of!
Very much enjoyed doing An Evening with Jim Rodford at The Maltings Arts Centre,St. Albans.
Jim is the legendary bass player with Argent, Mike Cotton Sounds, The Kinks and the Zombies. He presents memories and sounds from his career.
Hear a rare BBC interview with me and see my earliest surviving (1969) film on BBC Nottingham New Media.
Go to www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham and click on Nottingham's Moon Dance. This feature is now permanently on the BBC site.
More music!
Another recent great shoot was the launch DVD of Elephant Shelf's debut album; In Trouble Again at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, London on 2 July, which also featured Rupert Herries.
I've a photo gallery on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/ralphstephenson
