WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
|
Based on the award-winning TV comedy series "The League of Gentlemen,"
the fictional world of Royston Vasey is facing destruction. To avert
disaster the locals must send a small rescue party into the real world
and confront their creators. Fugitive butcher Hilary Briss (Gatiss) and
his two hostages, German exchange master Herr Lipp (Pemberton) and
businessman Geoff Tipps (Shearsmith) accidentally make it through and
discover their creators have decided to scrap their series on Royston
Vasey and replace it with a new creation - a 17th century demonic drama
called "The King's Evil" thus consigning Royston Vasey to annihilation.

WHAT'S IT LIKE?
|
A totally bizarre film, full of weird and wonderful characters,
particularly if, like me, you have never seen the TV series. Fans of the
show will probably get more out of this movie although the story does
stand up on its own. The opening gag, which runs for a good five minutes
or so, is ingenious.
Like in the TV series all the writers of the program also star in the
movie as the locals and as themselves too; that is all but Jeremy Dyson,
played by Michael Sheen in the film, as he doesn't appear in the
original show. David Warner (The Omen/Titanic) gives a rousing
performance as Dr Erasmus Pea, from the new demonic drama, who wants to
take over Royston Vasey. Watch out for some interesting cameos by
Victoria Wood, Peter Kay and Simon Pegg.
Wacky and surreal - one for The League of Gentlemen fans I feel.
