WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

US Navy pilots Ben Gannon (Lucas), Kara Wade (Biel) and Henry Purcell (Foxx) are part of a close knit crack division of test pilots who fly highly classified stealth fighter jets. They are the crème de la crème. Their commanding officer Captain George Cummings (Shepard) introduces them to their new wingman, an artificial intelligence based unmanned plane called EDI. Unfortunately when EDI goes AWOL during a mission the team has to bring it under control with dire consequences.

This is The Fast and the Furious in the skies meets Top Gun and Behind Enemy Lines. Directed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious/XXX) this is a high level octane non stop action packed rollercoaster ride. It’s loud, with mega explosions and frankly one for the boys. The plot is preposterous so don’t try to justify it or analyze it although it does touch on some interesting ideas. There is a totally gratuitous bikini scene in Thailand involving a very fit Jessica Biel (one for the boys).
Oscar winning Jamie Foxx and Josh Lucas make it more grounded and believable. Lucas, a somewhat underrated actor, carries the film. It’s the first movie to show nil collateral damage by the Americans in an attack in the middle of a city. No doubt George Bush’s dream. The explosions are truly spectacular particularly the big fuel air blast over North Korea. It’s totally dumb but great fun. Enjoy the ride.
