Who made it? * Director: Kevin Reynolds Writer: Dean Georgaris Cast: James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell * What’s it about? * Tristan (James Franco) is a great knight, who was raised by English leader, Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell), who is trying to unite the English tribes against the Irish. Tristan has a secret: he is in love with an Irish beauty, Isolde (Sophia Myles), but this love turns to a torment when Lord Marke marries Isolde. Tristan is torn between his love to Isolde and loyalty to Lord Mark and as the war rages between the English and Irish he has to make a choice.. * What’s it like? * “Tristan and Isolde” is main stream cinema as its best thanks to the stunning photography that is rarely seen in the cinema. The genius use of lights and attention to details transports us into a world that, despite its dark look, still feels magical and beautiful. However, the script has a few surprises that are hard to swallow. For example, Isolde finds Tristan on the beach, without a scratch or a burn on his skin, although we have seen him being torched earlier. Also the characters look too coifed for the dark ages of Britain, which doesn’t add to the credibility of the story. This film might lack the emotional depth and eloquent dialogue that we find in “Romeo and Juliet”, but its riveting visuals and gorgeous cast makes it a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable film. * UK release on April 21st.
