WHO MADE IT? | Director: David Frankel Cast: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt and Adrian Grenier | WHAT'S IT ABOUT? | Recent college graduate Andy Sachs (Hathaway) lands the job of assistant to the most powerful woman in fashion Miranda Priestly (Streep), the head of Runway Magazine - considered the Holy Grail. It's an opportunity that millions of young women would kill for, but no-one can survive. Andy is rather ordinary and drab and soon learns that to get on at Runway, you have to play the game - get model thin and become a fashionista. | WHAT'S IT LIKE? | Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger and directed by David Frankel, who's also directed episodes of the TV series Entourage and Sex and the City, this is a fun and glossy looking comedy with a message of sorts. It shows that if you want to make it to the top you can't have it all. It comes at a huge price, but at the same time it also shows you that super thin (size 0) is beautiful and equals a successful career. Somehow I fear a young female audience will remember the latter rather than the former. Meryl Streep is absolutely fabulous as the devil incarnate Miranda, dressed in toe to toe Prada. She reminds me of every female boss I have had and not in a good way. Stanley Tucci is a joy to watch as Miranda's right had man, who is bitchy and not afraid to speak his mind to her. Tucci ups his game every time and never disappoints. I have never seen him give a bad performance to date. Anne Hathaway shows her versatility as an actress going from Princess Diaries to the critically acclaimed drama Brokeback Mountain and now back to comedy but with a more contemporary theme -- and her next film Havoc is a real eye opener. If you have been suffering withdrawal symptoms since the end of Sex and the City then this film is definitely for you. It's set in New York and the clothes are fabulous - no doubt they will set trends. It's not a classic comedy but worth seeing for Streep. | Opens nationwide 5 October 2006
