The Door In The Floor (15) 111 mins

WHO MADE IT?
|
Director: Tod Williams Cast: Jon Foster Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger, Mimi Rogers
|
College boy Eddie (Foster) spends the summer with local author and artist Ted (Bridges), his wife Marion (Basinger) and their four year old daughter, Ruth.
He's hoping to learn from his mentor, but spends most of the time running errands and keeping Marion company, while Ted cavorts with his nude model (Rogers).
The recent death of the couple's sons caused the cloud to descend over their marriage and the resulting tension makes it hard for Eddie to fit -- all of which just helps to make it a summer he'll never forget.

WHAT'S IT LIKE?
|
This film has many levels: the couple's bereavement and marriage breakdown and the teenager learning that life's full of failed hopes and dashed expectations.
Bridges is in top form as the eccentric creative force, the archetypal loveable rogue. Basinger's introverted reticence successfully captures her character's hopelessness.
But as little more than an observer of the main drama, the key character of Eddie, who represents the audience, watching the disintegration of the marriage, is less interesting.
A needless flashback further hinders a plodding, predictable film, with little more to offer than its performances.
