IF POPPIES COULD PRAY
God knows how Mankind trains for war
As if no other way -
As if it were some noble chore,
Though most for peace would pray.
The leaders lead us come what might
Towards the battlefield,
While they look on as brave men fight -
Until one side must yield.
Until that moment, Hell takes hold
And won't give up its prize.
No, not for silver, not for gold,
Until the last man dies.
No mercy granted to the weak -
No matter, rich or poor.
It's just the outcome leaders seek -
As if the end to war.
Yet hate lives on, despite the peace
A treaty has declared.
The nightmares never seem to cease
For those who have despaired.
The leaders come, the leaders go,
Yet those who died are gone -
Another Christmas not to know...
Yet Mankind carries on.
God knows that we must co-exist.
Till then God still forgives.
With every poppy we enlist
Each knows Remembrance lives.
Each poppy bought still signifies
The debt of honour due.
While most support such sacrifice,
The choice is up to you...
