About:
|
Arun Ghosh is a British-Asian clarinettist, composer and music educator. He has been selected for this year's edition of the Jerwood/PRS Foundation 'Take Five' initiative for emerging jazz musicians produced by Serious. ( http://www.serious.org.uk/index2.cfm?refid=85&tmpt=tmpt1&tmptID=163 ) Conceived in Calcutta, bred in Bolton and matured in Manchester, living in London, Arun's musical vocabulary and vision reflects his rich geographical heritage. Using the spirit and language of jazz, with the sounds and styles of hip-hop, Indian classical and folk, western classical, rock, pop and avant-garde, Arun's music is full of lyrical melodies and searching harmonies, down to earth directness and psychedelic ambient introspection. To hear some music from Arun's forthcoming album, and to see some electric live footage, please visit http://www.myspace.com/arunghosh His Indo-Jazz sextet play original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude, rocking urban beats and the passion of punk. Sweet and timeless melodies give birth to soaring improvisations and raag explorations, driven by a heady mix of dub-reggae bass, tabla trickery and ferocious drum explosions. The stellar line up consists of: Arun Ghosh - clarinet Idris Rahman (Soothsayers) - tenor saxophone Dr Das (AsianDubFoundation) - bass Aref Durvesh (Nitin Sawnhey, Susheela Rahman) - tabla and dholak Kishon Khan (Dele Sosime) - piano Myke Wilson (Texas, Swing Out Sister) - drums The band rocked the Southbank at their debut gig at the London Jazz Festival in November 2007 - you can view footage of the gig on http://youtube.com/camocivision In addition to leading his own groups, Arun plays clarinet in the Balkan/Gypsy Beats band, Forty Thieves Orkestar.
