About:

Hi. My name's Cat Mackay. I'm a violinist, composer and orchestrator based in Glasgow. I graduated from the BA Applied Music course at the University of Strathclyde in 2004, my honours specialisations being Solo Performance (Violin) and "Music and Film". I now own and manage a String Quartet who are based in Glasgow, and who regularly perform music for weddings throughout west and central Scotland. Rhapsody String Quartet are available for hire for real weddings, on-screen weddings (no more actors who blatantly don't know how to hold an instrument - nevermind look convincing miming with it...!) or film premieres. |

As a violinist I am an experienced soloist, but also have many musical contacts and can easily get an ensemble of any size and combination of instruments together, especially within the Glasgow area. I am a classically trained musician but also have experience playing folk music. Both of which are styles which can easily be transferred and adapted to suit Jazz/Indie/Rock/Pop bands who may wish to have a string section backing on recorded album tracks. I now own and manage a String Quartet who are based in Glasgow, and who regularly perform music for weddings throughout west and central Scotland. Rhapsody String Quartet are available for hire for real weddings, on-screen weddings (no more actors who blatantly don't know how to hold an instrument - nevermind look convincing miming with it...!), recording studio sessions or for providing music at film premieres. As a composer and orchestrator, my Music and Film folio consists of 30 minutes of clips from a wide range films including: Braveheart (Historic Drama), Chicken Run (Animation), Erin Brockovich (Legal Drama Adaptation), Minority Report (Sci Fi), Paris When It Sizzles (1960s Romantic Comedy), Romeo + Juliet - the Baz Luhrmann one (Modernised Shakespearean Drama), Saving Private Ryan (WW2 Drama), The Blue Planet (Documentary), The Matrix (Sci Fi), The Three Amigos (Comedy Western). Each film clip has a different compositional purpose/theme to it, whether it be atmospheric music to underline the visual themes of striving, depression/defeat, sensuality/romance, or using techniques such as mickey-mousing, building tension, underscoring dialogue or even highlighting a sense of place or time period, or simply writing a suitable theme song that is appropriate to a film as a whole.
