Artist & New Release Information At its best, music transcends boundaries. Artists blend genres and styles with innovation and personality to create something distinctive and new. This has been accomplished by Richard Murray on Desert Wind. Richard, a native of Northern Ireland, began learning piano at age 8 and has since mastered several instruments. He “...knows above all how to score points with his incredible dulcet flowing voice... but also plays excellent acoustic and electric guitar as well as mandolin.”(1) He spent the early part of his musical career playing in punk and rock bands as a drummer and guitarist before moving to England to complete his music degree. After college he spent time living and working in the US before returning to Ireland to begin his post-grad studies and playing bass with the Irish showbands. Richard earned his spurs gigging and touring with these bands and other rock/tribute acts before relocating to London in 2005 where his work as a full-time session musician has led him down even more musical avenues. He has since been playing and recording with a variety of artists in a variety of genres, not to mention making music videos, producing, writing and television work with Sky Sports. Recent touring has taken him throughout Scandinavia and western Europe and as far afield as China. Richard has also made appearances, and is set to appear, at many top venues and events including the 02 Wireless Festival. In 2008 he completed a 5 month residency in France with 'The Juggernaut of Rock' on bass, during this time he has also been performing solo and promoting his music in the media. 2008 also saw the official release of Desert Wind – Richard finally decided it was the right time to draw upon his wide-ranging influences and experience and record his first solo album. The songs are “...an epic taste of the extraordinary future that Murray has landed himself in music.”(2) Although unique in many ways, this is a country album at its heart with shades of Dylan, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, Rolling Stones and Springsteen. Richard's debut “...has quite a diverse sound, from acoustic ballads to bluegrass to upbeat country rock whereby he displays his outstanding abilities with song and soulful sound.”(3) The album has a great deal of scope although it is deceptively simple and accessible, it is “...the complete package of excellent musicianship, production, and songwriting.”(4) Richard's music has been enjoying great reviews and extensive radio play throughout Europe – he has already won Radio Indy's 'Gold Artist' and 'Grindie' awards. He has also been nominated by a number of DJs who compile the official Euro Americana Chart, as well as being Uk Country Radio's Spotlight Artist.
