  1. What equipment do I require to broadcast Video on the web?

Your computer must be equipped with a Video capture card. There are a large number of such card available, ranging from cheap analogue VHS/SVHS cards up to professional Digital Video (DV) cards. In general, the more expensive your capture card, the better the resulting Video quality will be.

  2. Which Video formats are supported by UK screen?

You can broadcast your video in any or all of the following formats: Real Audio, Windows Media, MPEG, and QuickTime.

Our system streams all the above media files. Streaming means that users will be able to play your video instantly without having to download the entire file.

  3. How do I get my Video in the correct format?

There are three stages involved in broadcasting Video on UK screen:

    1. Use the Video Capture card to capture the Video (from Video Tape, Camcorder, etc.) to your computer.
    2. Encode the Video into one of the above formats.
    3. Upload the resulting file to UK screen or upload it to your web server and then link it to your ukscreen page.

The first stage (capturing) is dependent on your capture card. The Software and Instructions should be provided with your capture card. The result of the capture will generally be a file in AVI or MOV Format.

To encode your video for the web, you need to download the appropriate encoding software for each of the above formats. These encoding programs for Windows Media and Real Media are available Free.
The encoding programs allow you to optimise you video stream for different Internet connections. But if you encode only one speed then we recommend 56K/s, which will permit modem and broadband users to watch your film. You can link two video speeds from each format for each video clip on UKscreen. But you are allowed to upload one video file to ukscreen.

  4. I am not a paying member, But I want to broadcast my video?

If you have a personal website on a different server then you can upload your video files onto that server then, using UKscreen forms, you can link them to your page. If you don't have a webpage, then check with your ISP (internet service provider) if they offer you free webspace -they usually do- and upload you files there.

  5. What file size can I upload to my Ukscreen page?

2000KB (2 MB) for a showreel and 5000KB (5MB) for a production. This should allow you to encode at least 10-20 min 56K/s video in Real Media format.

  6. My Video is on a different server, can I just link it to your server?

There is an option in the Broadcast form which will allow you to type a link to your video file instead of uploading it. Your file must be of the correct format and available on a web server. Depending on the type of file, the following link types are supported:

    • Real Audio - Your file must be Real Media file (.rm, .ra, .ram extension) and located on a standard Web (http://) or Real Media (rtsp://) server, e.g. if your file name is media.rm and your server name is myserver.com then your link will be either:
      • http://mysever.com/media.rm  (if myserver.com is a standard web server)
      • rtsp://myserver.com/media.rm  (if myserver.com is a Real Media server)
    • Windows Media - Your file must be a Windows Media Audio (.wma, .wmv, .asf .asx extensions) file and located on a web (http://) or Windows Media (mms://) server.
    • MPEG - your file must have a .mpg or .mpeg extension and be located on a standard Web (http://) or FTP (ftp://) server.
    • QuickTime - your file must have a .mov extension and be located on a standard Web (http://) or quicktime (rtsp://) server.
You can link two files (speeds) from each format, which total 8 files per video clip.

Warning: Do not link files from other websites, without the permission of their webmaster.

  7. What if I want to take my Video off UK screen?

You have complete control over your Video even when it is on our server. Select "Edit Page" from the sidebar of your production where you will have the option to delete your Video.

Please note that UK screen maintains the right to remove any material (video, audio, text, or photograph) from the site if it does not comply with the conditions of our policy.
